Anemia Could Add to Surgical Risks

Likelihood of complications, death higher for patients with this blood disorder, study says

THURSDAY, Oct. 6 (HealthDay News) — Anemia increases the risk of death and complications in patients who have different types of surgery, not just heart operations, a new study says.

It was known that patients with anemia have worse outcomes after heart surgery, but anemia’s impact on non-cardiac surgical outcomes wasn’t clear. People with anemia are deficient in red blood cells.

For the new study, researchers analyzed data from more than 227,000 U.S. patients who had various types of surgery: general, vascular, orthopedic, gynecological, urological, neurosurgical, otolaryngological, plastic and thoracic. Of the patients in the study, 69,229 had anemia before their surgery.

Facts about salt

* The English word salary comes from the Latin salarium (salt).
* A typical daily salt intake in Western countries is 9 grams per day, which is about twice more than ideal level recommended by World Health Organization.
* Up to 75% of consumed salt comes with ready products such as bread, ready meals, soups and breakfast cereals.
* Another 15% are added to food during its preparation, as well as at the table.
* About 10% of salt is contained in most foods.

What is salt

Salt is a compound of sodium and chlorine and is a vital product. It is often used to improve taste of food and its longer storage. Most often, we use regular table salt. Other popular species include sea or mountain salt. Their taste may differ somewhat, although any salt consists of sodium and chlorine. Sodium is a mineral that is involved in regulation of water balance and is necessary for formation of nerve impulses and muscle contraction. But an excess of sodium in combination with other factors, diet and lifestyle, such as alcohol, smoking and low physical activity, increases blood pressure.

Healing diets

Modern health care facilities use a number system of healing diets, providing curative individuality of people with various diseases. Some diets have several options. Each diet includes: indications, general characteristics, chemical composition and energy value, recommended and excluded foods and dishes.

Featured products and dishes: yesterday’s or dried bread, biscuits, mashed vegetables, soups, milk soup of mashed grains, lean meat, poultry, fish, steam or boiled dishes from them, milk, cream, sour yogurt, buttermilk, cottage cheese, potato, carrot, beet, cauliflower, cereals: semolina, rice, buckwheat, oatmeal, sweet berries and fruits in shabby, boiled and baked form.
